China & The Far East
Normally, the most comfortable weather in China is in autumn (September to early-October). During this period temperatures are reasonable throughout China and there’s generally not too much rain. For this reason, September is the only time when the ancient and valuable paintings of the Beijing Palace Museum are displayed. You could also consider the ‘shoulder seasons’, March to April and June to August, when the prices are cheaper, the attractions less crowded, but the weather in China is a little less predictable.
Two great months to visit Japan are April and November. April shows the cherry blossom in full bloom (the last week of March and first week of April in Tokyo) and the weather is pleasantly mild. In November, the weather is dry and mild, airfares are relatively low and the coloured autumn leaves are spectacular.
New Years, Golden Week (April/ May), and Obon (mid-August) tend to be the busiest festivals for the Japanese and it may make things much more crowded and expensive than usual. New Years is exceptional--some really wish to experience this Japanese holiday despite the crowds, as it is the most important holiday in Japan.
For travellers venturing to Tibet, April to November are the best months for overland tours while trekking is best between April and early-October.
