Australia
Everyone knows that the weather in Australia is amazing but September and October
could be described as the very best all-round months to visit Australia. This is
because you’ll avoid the scorching heat of mid-summer (hottest December to March)
and the cooler nights of winter. Remember that Australia and New Zealand are in
the Southern Hemisphere so the seasons are reversed.
Having said that, the north and the Outback are better in winter (June – August)
and the southern beaches can be gorgeous right through the summer. North Queensland
and the Northern Territory are at risk of cyclones right through the summer and
these can often be accompanied by serious flooding. Some argue that Kakadu National
Park is best visited in the summer when the rivers are full, waterfalls flowing,
and everything is lush and green. That is probably true, but there is always the
risk of flooded roads restricting access.
Australians tend to take their summer holidays between mid-December to the end of
January and their winter holidays around June and July. These coincide with school
holidays and the roads can be a lot busier if you are considering a
self-drive vacation.
Of course, don’t forget Sydney for New Year’s Eve for one of the world’s biggest
partys!
New Zealand is further south than Australia and tends not to suffer as much from
the extreme summer heat. It also tends not to be bothered by the cyclones and floods
which can affect northern Australia. The high season is December to March and you
can expect the pricing and availability of flights and hotels to reflect this.
The South Pacific Islands including Fiji
can get quite hot between December and April. This is also the rainy season – expect
tropical storms and possible cyclones. The best time to go is October when the weather
is hot but not unbearable. Like most places, it can get chilly at night.
