The Review

On arrival at Paro, enjoy a beautiful drive through mountains to Thimphu, Bhutan's charming capital. Begin with a comprehensive touring in Thimphu and explore its many cultural attractions and important Buddhist highlights.  Urbanisation began here when Thimphu was proclaimed as a national capital in 1952 and the Dechenchoeling Palace was built. Even today the city retains its ethnic architectural style and is the only capital in the world with no traffic lights.

Yet unlike other capital cities in the world, Thimphu remains essentially pastoral in character and changes its demeanour with the seasons. The best way to explore Thimphu is by foot and experience the local culture. A walk up and down the street will always be enlightening. From the farmers that come to trade supplies in the city, to Bhutanese businessmen, to the monk body there will always be a colourful gathering passing by.

Journey into central Bhutan via Himalayan passes offering great vistas to Punakha the winter residence of the central monk body. Located in a sub-tropical valley it has a beautiful Punakha Dzong on an island surrounded by the Pho Chu (male) river and the Mo chu (female) river. To return to Paro, we trek over the mountains with your private guide. The short trek will allow a glimpse into this remote culture and you will be amazed by the warmth of the Bhutanese and their sheer charm that will make a journey here a real privilege indeed.

Returning to Paro, you’ll witness one of the most spectacular monasteries in the world, the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Enjoy the stunning view of the monastery, where Guru Padmasambhava flew on the back of a tiger and landed there in the 8th century, and meditated. We will take some rest and picnic before returning to a hotel for a nice warm bath.
