Into the Heart of Nepal
There are few places in the world that are isolated and where people still live in their old traditional ways. The region of Dolpo, located in the trans-Himalaya behind the Dhaulagiri massif and towards the Tibetan plateau is one such place. Cut off by a series of high passes closed by snow most of the year, this remote region is gradually emerging as an enchanting destination for adventure and ethno-cultural tourism offering an ancient culture and lifestyle of over 5000 years.
UNLEASH YOUR MOJO: ON THIS FASCINATING 14-DAY TREK TO SHEY PHUKSUMDO IN DOLPO.
This private tour begins in Kathmandu, where you have a private guide to explore the city’s spectacular temples and stupas, the religious sites for Buddhists and Hindus. Visit surrounding towns to appreciate the Newari architecture and craftsmanship. Take an (optional) early morning flight to view the majestic peaks of Mt. Everest, Makalu and other mountains – a once in a lifetime experience.
The trek to Shey Phoksundo begins with a short flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal in the Dolpo region. The trek begins from Juphal along the river bank, passing through ancient villages, high passes and isolated Buddhist monasteries. En route you will experience a vast array of wildlife, including Blue sheep, Mountain Goat, Jackal, Wolf and the legendary Snow Leopard. This was the ancient caravan route on which traders brought rock salt and tea from Tibet.
The Phoksundo lake with its aquamarine greenish blue waters is considered sacrosanct by the locals. With no aquatic life in the lake, the water is crystal clear and it is indeed a jewel in the heart of Dolpo, We will stay here for two nights to explore its surrounds.
The shape of Shey Phoksundo Lake resembles a lowercase Latin alphabet “r”. Since the camping site is on the southern bank and the high mountains encircle the lake the best spot to view the entire lake is from the viewpoint about 200 meters above the village. The hike to the viewpoint passes through a pine grove and after a steep ascent reaches a viewpoint from where you can see the entire lake.
Dolpo’s main attraction is its rich religious and cultural heritage, thousands years history inherited from the ancestors. We will explore the nearby villages and monasteries to get a close understanding of their culture and religion. We will return to hamlet of Juphal from where we catch our flight to Nepalgunj, Pokhara or Kathmandu.

In the Dolpo region, the “Amchis” are the traditional healers. Their practice is still largely prevalent in upper Dolpo. The Amchis use variety of natural herbs and minerals to cure illnesses. Recognizing the utility of Amchis and in an effort to promote the understanding of traditional indigenous medicine an Amchi hospital is setup in Sunduwa. A tour of this facility and a chit chat with the practitioners is a unique experience!
