Ladakh Adventure

Want to feel like a Himalayan explorer. In 1981-82, our CEO undertook the first Trans-Himalayan expedition from Arunachal in the north-east to the Karakorams (north of Ladakh) in the north-west covering a distance of over 8,000 kms on foot, in 475 days. It was a once in a life time experience that turned his life forever. Many years later he launched the tour company that offers an experience of travelling as a free spirit. Take the challenge and feel free – AwimAway at leisure.

This Trans-Himalayan adventure from Manali to Leh is one of the most exciting and adventurous road trips you can take in the Himalayas. Although not for the faint-hearted, it has been in high demand during the summer.

Your road trip starts from the charming hill station Manali. You will drive through its deep verdant valleys into the high Himalayas, where the landscape changes to an arid high-altitude desert. The highlight of this tour is a spectacular drive through some of the world’s highest motorable passes, including the Taklang La at over 5,000 meters. There, while still short of breath, you will stop on high windswept and desolate Himalayan passes to admire and photograph the changing hues and vistas of nature. Such is the beauty of the high Himalaya.

Across the Himalayan passes is Ladakh or mini-Tibet, where you will explore Leh and Nubra Valley, with beautiful monasteries, scattered through the region along the blue waters of the Indus River. If we are lucky, we may see rare wildlife including the magnificent snow leopard. If not, it still will be an amazing journey to remember.

During the driving section of the tour, the camps are basic but elsewhere the accommodation is first-class. The Leh hotel is comfortable but simple.

Getting There

All major international airlines fly to India’s main airports: Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad. Airports tend to be on the outskirts of cities. Pre-paid taxi services and auto-rickshaws are stationed outside the terminus to get you into the city.

If you are travelling with AwimAway, transfers from an airport in India are arranged by our representatives who will meet you at the arrival lounge and transfer you to the hotel.
