Ecuador Amazon Holiday

Ecuadorian Amazon is one of the most bio-diverse areas on the planet. It is home to an incredible array of plant and animal species as well as extraordinary indigenous Indian cultures. The Yasuní Biosphere Reserve is home to over 800 species of fish, thousands of species of plants and trees and more than 300 species of mammals, including monkeys and jaguars. And many of the 1600 species of birds in Ecuador, are found in the Amazon Region, including toucans, macaws and tanagers.

Begin in Quito, one of South America’s best-preserved colonial cities. Transfer to Ecuador’s Amazonian rainforest, filled with cacophonous soundtrack of birds and insects, fluorescent birds and butterflies. Spot pink dolphins, white caimans and giant river otters in the waterways. Next, cruise to the Galapagos Islands and watch its unique wildlife. Also visit Otavalo Valley dominated by Koatacotkie volcano, known for beautiful valleys, quiet provincial towns and weaving villages.

Getting There Ecuador: There are no direct flights to Ecuador from the UK and Ireland, but there are plenty of indirect flights to both Quito and Guayaquil involving a flight change in Europe or the US. Approximate flying times from the US to Quito is four hours from Miami and around five hours from Houston and Atlanta. Iberia and Air Comet offer services via Madrid, and KLM via Amsterdam. Other possibilities include taking a flight to South American hubs, such as Bogotá or Caracas, from where connections to Ecuador can be made. Typical journey times are between 15 to 17 hours.

Galapagos: There are daily flights to Galapagos from Quito and Guayaquil. The airline allows one checked suitcase (maximum 44 lbs.) and one carry-on bag per passenger. We recommend that all passengers travelling to Galapagos consider two nights in mainland Ecuador prior to their cruise to allow for potential flight delays and misconnection.  This is particularly important for passengers travelling over winter holidays when flights tend to be overbooked and/or delayed caused by poor weather conditions.

When to go The Galapagos have a surprisingly cool, sub-tropical climate. There are two seasons, both of which have some precipitation. Galapagos gets an average of ten inches of rain per year, it is never considered “rainy”. During the months of December to May, the cooling currents subside, temperatures rise and the climate is warm and sunny with occasional showers. In June, the trend begins toward cooler temperatures with moderate breezes, which continue through November. This period is referred to as the “garua” season, meaning mist in Spanish.
