Abu Camp is a contemporary interpretation of the classic safari aesthetic and is seamlessly integrated into the natural environment. Each suite in Abu Camp is individually decorated in calming colours that mirror the sun-bleached landscape and have private elevated teak deck. The lounge and dining tent has a breath-taking view over the lagoon. Sundowners around a traditional campfire are followed by five-star meals complemented by award-winning wines. 

Plains game in the Abu Camp area includes species like impala, red lechwe, tsessebe, zebra, warthog and giraffe as well as herds of wild elephants. The primary carnivores are lion, spotted hyaena and leopard which can be seen while on game activities. The Abu Camp concession is ideally placed in the Okavango Delta for excellent bird viewing by mokoro. Species seen are: The Malachite Kingfisher, White-browed Coucal, Luapula Cisticola, Pied Kingfisher, Rufous-bellied Heron and Great Egret.

Daily routine in Abu Camp starts with a morning breakfast around a campfire followed by an elephant-back safari (fantastic for game viewing), a walk with the elephants, or a mokoro trip through the reed-fringed waterways (best for birding). After lunch, there’s siesta time before a late-afternoon game drive or motorboat cruise (ideal for viewing hippos and crocs up close) followed by sundowners and a multi-course dinner including excellent South African wines

Abu Camp OKAVANGO DELTA, BOTSWANA


Stay Abu Camp is a classic safari camp with 6 luxurious tents with a capacity for 12 guests (or 14 with children) plus pilots/ leader/ guides. The luxury architect-designed tents are individually furnished with en suite bathroom to include an indoor shower and an outdoor copper bath. Soaps, shampoos, hairdryers and bathrobes are supplied. Rooms have an electronic safe, ceiling fans, tea and coffee stations and a small bar fridge. Each tent has a viewing deck overlooking the lagoon.



The Camp The Abu Camp is situated in an ancient riverine forest overlooking a large lagoon. A large canvas dining, and lounge area is on a tiered wooden deck. Adventure enthusiasts can spend a night in a Star-Bed platform situated at the elephant enclosure. Massages, manicures or pedicures are available in-room on a request basis. There is an open-air gym near the pool.


ChildCare Children 6 years and older are welcome to stay at the Abu Camp. Children aged 6-16 can be accommodated on special request in two of the six tents, meaning a maximum of 14 beds can be provided. Mokoro excursions, riding or walking with the elephants are for 13 years and older.


Safari The focus at Abu Camp is on the Elephant Experience. The herd currently comprises seven elephants. Guests ride two at a time, allowing for six guests to ride simultaneously on an activity whilst the remaining guests (maximum 6) walk alongside the elephants or enjoy one of the other activities on offer. You can sleep on the star bed platform overlooking the Elephant Boma. Walking and riding with the elephants is allowed for 13 years and older. 


Experience The Abu Camp concession is ideally placed in the Okavango Delta for excellent bird viewing by mokoro. Particularly exciting sights include; the Malachite Kingfisher, White-browed Coucal, Luapula Cisticola, Pied Kingfisher, Rufous-bellied Heron and Great Egret. Fishing is on a catch and release basis (prohibited in January and February for fish breeding purposes). Abu Camp has a small stock of basic rods and reels but if interested bring your own fly fishing equipment.

Location Abu Camp, Okavango Delta, Botswana is located in 180,000-hectare private Abu Concession on the Western side of the Okavango Delta. 
 

Getting There Maun is the gateway to the Okavango Delta, which is best reached from Johannesburg by a 2-hour international flight. Abu Camp is accessed by light aircraft on a short 30-minute flight. The flight from Kasane takes one hour and 30 mins. Please note, light aircraft transfers have 15kg luggage restrictions in soft, squashable bags.
 

When to go Botswana’s winter months from May to October are dry and cool with chilly nights. Botswana has hot, wet summers from October to April. Botswana has one rainy season which runs between December and February, sometimes continuing into March, with rain generally in the form of afternoon thundershowers. Best time to travel is all year round.
