MNEMBA ISLAND, ZANZIBAR
Mnemba Island is a tiny atoll off the north-eastern tip of Zanzibar, with one of the most glamorous coastal retreats in southern Africa. This private island with a circumference of just about 1.5km, is home to only 12 secluded bandas hidden in the shady palms beside pristine beach. Memba Island forms part of a beautiful atoll, that is surrounded by breath-taking coral reefs and boasts some of Africa’s most magnificent dive sites.
Memba Island Lodge has 12 beachside bandas, including a family banda. These are set in the casuarina trees in the centre of the island and spaced out to provide space and privacy. Each of the bandas are open-sided, thatched wooden suites with its own private veranda and a beach sala. Interiors are created with wood, rattan, reed and rough glass. Each room is spacious, with large, rush matting floors, and simple but stylish furniture.
Mnemba Island and its surrounds boast a wealth of sea life and marine species. Humpback whales, as well as many species of dolphin, a number of shark and several types of ray are encountered in the ocean depths. Turtle season peaks between March and June (however, laying can occur year-round) and these prehistoric creatures can be seen laying their eggs on the beaches. Activities on offer include snorkelling, diving, kayaking, fly fishing and windsurfing.
