Ngala Safari Lodge is located within the famed Kruger National Park. This is Big 5 territory known for big lion prides but particularly known for its elephant, buffalo and rhino, as well as its packs of wild dog. Meaning ‘lion’ in Shangaan, Ngala was the first private safari reserve to be incorporated into the world-famous Kruger National Park. Providing outstanding potential for game viewing, Ngala Lodge is a great choice for families and couples alike.
Set in the midst of an African bush, Ngala Safari Lodge is an old-world haven with its colonial antiques, silver cutlery and crystal glassware. With a timeless, unhurried atmosphere, combined with the quaint traditions of a bygone era, it creates an aura of romance and nostalgia. Set under immense mopane and tamboti trees, Ngala Safari Lodge has twenty thatched cottages with shaded verandas, elegantly spaced out to ensure perfect privacy of your retreat.
Ngala Private Game Reserve is home to all of the Big Five, but is particularly known for its elephant, buffalo and rhino, as well as its packs of wild dog. Leopard and cheetah are also often encountered. The blue wildebeest, with their handlebar horns, and the striking zebra with their vibrant stripes are a common sight among the bushveld savanna. Ngala Safari Lodge also provides massages and wellness treatments in the sala or on your private viewing deck while you watch elephants drinking from the swimming pool.

Stay The Ngala Safari Lodge offers 20 thatched cottages and a spacious Family Suite. Tucked under a canopy of mopane and tamboti trees, each ensuite cottage, with private veranda, exudes a romantic colonial ambiance with nostalgic safari memorabilia throughout. The gracious Family Suite or Safari Suite accommodates four guests and includes a sitting room, a private swimming pool and the use of a private vehicle.
The Camp The main area at the Ngala Safari Lodge has thatched dining, bar and sitting areas, open to the African bushveld and the large swimming pool looks out over a busy waterhole where elephants are frequently sighted. Day meals are served in the dappled shade of an enormous weeping boerbean tree, while dinner is served in the candle and lantern-lit courtyard or in the dramatic boma (outdoor dining area).
ChildCare Children are welcome to stay at the Ngala Safari Lodge. There is a two-bedroom Family Suite, with its own swimming pool, as well as a dedicated vehicle and ranger/ tracker team, offers an exclusive family getaway. Restaurant is flexible with children meals, menus and serving times.
Safari Ngala Safari Lodge is situated in Ngala Private Game Reserve, which shares an unfenced boundary with Kruger National Park, one of the biggest game reserves in the world. A spectacular diversity of wildlife moves through this immense wilderness; including breeding herds of elephant, leopard, spotted hyena, giraffe, large buffalo herds and white rhino. With its name meaning lion in Shangaan, the local language, Ngala lives up to its promise, supporting several large prides of these powerful cats.
Experience Set out early morning in an open 4x4 safari vehicle in the company of your guide. Ngala Private Game Reserve is home to the Big Five, but is particularly well known for its large prides of lion and occasional sightings of wild dog and leopard, as well as large herds of elephant and buffalo. Return to the camp for breakfast, lunch and siesta. Cool off in the pool before proceeding for a late afternoon game drive that lasts until after dark, when spotlights are used for a glimpse into the nocturnal bush life. Enjoy sundowners in a scenic location. Return for dinner.
Location Ngala Safari Lodge lies on the western boundary of the Kruger National Park in the southern part of the Timbavati Game Reserve.
Getting there South Africa’s OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) in Johannesburg, is the major gateway, offering both domestic and international connections. From Johannesburg Ngala Private Game Reserve is easily accessed by air to Nelspruit or Hoedspruit followed by a comfortable 2-hour and 45 minute road transfer to Ngala. Air charters to Ngala can be arranged flying directly to Ngala. Driving time from Johannesburg to Ngala Safari Lodge is approximately 6-hour on tarred roads.
When to go Best time for game viewing in South Africa is from March to October. Summer in South Africa, from November to March can be hot and humid but a good time to see lots of beautiful migratory birds. South Africa’s winter, from May to September is dry with cold nights while Spring between September and October is very dry, with hot, dry winds. South Africa rains start end of October until March, with typical afternoon thundershowers in April.
