This chic and contemporary Ngala Tented Camp never lets you forget that you are in the wild. Located in the exclusive Ngala Game Reserve, which is attached to the game rich Kruger National Park, it offers all of the Big Five animals. There are elephants, buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and the rare wild dog. Sleeping under canvas, in this game rich region, and hearing night sounds of roaring lions, creates a nostalgic “out of Africa” experience.
Ngala Tented Camp is renowned for sophisticated tented accommodation in tranquil bush surrounds. It comprises nine luxurious tented suites set on raised platforms with outdoor showers, baths mounted on rough-hewn wooden bases, swirling overhead fans, air conditioning, electric blankets for winter and private wooden decks. A lap pool merges with the contours of the riverbank, and the ambience is one of old time safari journeys to Africa.
Ngala Private Game Reserve is home to all of the Big Five, but is particularly known for its elephant, buffalo and rhino, as well as its packs of wild dog. Leopard and cheetah are also often encountered. Elephant are completely dependent on water and will travel considerable distances to a watering hole, making this the perfect place to watch out for them. Elephant, as well as buffalo, are often encountered in the reed beds around the Timbavati River.

Stay Ngala Tented Camp has only nine luxurious and spacious tents, overlooking the Timbavati River. Built on platforms, each tented suite is cleverly designed to blend into the riverside trees, minimising impact on the environment. The overall essence of the Ngala Tented Camp is African, with warm, earthy tones used throughout. Rooms have air conditioning, overhead fans and electric blankets for the winter months. While its large bathrooms have oversized baths and refreshing outdoor showers.
The Camp The main dining and lounge areas at the Ngala Tented Camp are comfortably furnished with modern sofas and chairs. Meals are served al fresco around a bon fire or in your own spacious tent. Activities include twice daily game drives in an open Land Rover as well as nature walks on the reserve. There is also a hide that offers opportunities to photograph game at close quarters. Additional activities include learning how to track animals, and there are also specialist and photographic safaris.
ChildCare Children of 11 years and above are welcome to stay at the Ngala Tented Camp, but there are no specific facilities available.
Safari Ngala Tented camp is situated in the Ngala Private Game Reserve, which shares an unfenced boundary with the world-renowned Kruger National Park. A spectacular diversity of wildlife moves through this immense wilderness, including breeding herds of elephant, leopard, spotted hyena, giraffe, large buffalo herds and white rhino. With its name meaning lion in Shangaan, the local language, Ngala lives up to its promise, supporting several large prides of these powerful cats. African wild dog can also be spotted moving through the reserve.
Experience The day starts at dawn with morning game drives in an open 4x4 safari vehicle in the company of your guide. Ngala Private Game Reserve is home to all of the Big Five, but is particularly well known for its large prides of lion and occasional sightings of wild dog and leopard, as well as large herds of elephant and buffalo. Return to the Tented Camp for breakfast, lunch and siesta. Then cool off in the pool before proceeding for a late afternoon game drive that lasts until after dark, when spotlights are used for a glimpse into the nocturnal bush life. Enjoy sundowners in a scenic location. Return for dinner.
Location Ngala Tented Camp is situated in Ngala Private Game Reserve on 14,700 hectares of exclusive game-rich Kruger National Park, Northern Province, South Africa.
Getting There South Africa’s OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) in Johannesburg, is the major gateway, offering both domestic and international connections. From Johannesburg Ngala Private Game Reserve is easily accessed by air to Nelspruit or Hoedspruit followed by a comfortable 2-hour and 45-minute road transfer to Ngala. Air charters to Ngala can be arranged flying directly to Ngala. Driving time from Johannesburg to Ngala Tented Camp is approximately 6-hour on tarred roads.
When to go Best time for game viewing in South Africa is from March to October. Summer in South Africa, from November to March can be hot and humid but a good time to see lots of beautiful migratory birds. South Africa’s winter, from May to September is dry with cold nights while Spring between September and October is very dry, with hot, dry winds. South Africa rains start end of October until March, with typical afternoon thundershowers in April.
