Savute Under Canvas

Savute Under Canvas is a luxury mobile tented camp, set in an expansive Savute corner of Chobe National Park, with high concentrations of wildlife. The area’s main feature is the mysterious Savute Channel, which flows and dries up seemingly unrelated to the rainfall. After being dry for almost 26 years, the Savute Channel started flowing again and the region has undergone a startling transformation, attracting large numbers of wildlife to this rejuvenated wilderness.

The semi-mobile tented camps of Savute Under Canvas are carefully positioned every five or six days at exclusive wilderness sites along the Savute Channel and as close as possible to the resident game. With just five ensuite safari tents, this is true African experience, where guests can expect to see few other people or vehicles. The central mess area is an open sided dining and lounge tent, where three course meals are served around a campfire.

Savute is an area of open savanna through which a seasonal river runs. Game drives at the Savute Under Canvas can view large elephant herds, especially its enormous bulls. Savute also offers opportunities to spot the full complement of the Big Five: elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion and leopard. With grazing now plentiful, the area is also popular with zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe, tsessebe and kudu. Spend nights under canvas and get close to nature in the landscape of an African night.

Stay Savute Under Canvas has just five classic tents. Each of the comfortable tents has wooden framed double or twin beds, bedside tables and hurricane lamps. Ensuite bathroom has a separate w.c and steaming hot bucket shower, with water delivered on request. The sides of the tents are rolled up easily in order to provide incredible view of the plains outside. Laundry is included at Savute Under Canvas and weather permitting will be back to you that same day.

The Camp The guest areas at the Savute Under Canvas comprise a communal mess tent usually set up in the middle of the camp with comfortable resting and dining areas where guests meet for pre-dinner drink or just relax between game drives. Dinner is a little more formal usually consisting of a three-course meal including a soup, traditional main course and a dessert. All meals are included within your stay at Savute Under Canvas.

ChildCare Children of 12 years and above are welcome to stay at the Savute Under Canvas. The Camp is un-fenced and hence is not suitable for younger guests. The camp staff accompany guests at all times when walking around the lodge at night.

Safari This is a game rich area where sizable numbers of elephant bulls are invariably present. Savute also supports the greatest concentration of the lion prides. During the dry years, when prey was hard to find, many of Savute’s lions became notorious for hunting elephant. The intensity of competition in the area around Savute Under Canvas is best captured by Derek and Beverly Joubert in their National Geographic film: Eternal Enemies, following the lives of lion and hyena.

Experience A typical day at Savute Under Canvas begins with a morning game drive on an open 4x4 safari vehicle in the company of your guide. The focus here is to be at the right place at the right time, to see as much wildlife as possible. Savute is known for its high concentration of lion and you may be lucky to see a pride resting after its nightly hunt. In the evening, you are likely to see game coming to drink at the nearby watering holes - perhaps elephant, zebra or tsessebe.

When to go Botswana’s winter months from May to October are dry and cool with chilly nights. Botswana has hot, wet summers from October to April. Botswana has one rainy season which runs between December and February, sometimes continuing into March, with rain generally in the form of afternoon thundershowers. Best time to travel is all year round. There is great fishing from March to December, with catches of tiger fish, bream, catfish and tilapia.
