Shumba Camp

KAFUE AND WESTERN ZAMBIA, ZAMBIA

Shumba Camp in Kafue National Park, is perfectly situated to take advantage of the game and predator concentrations of the Busanga Plains. It is situated within close proximity to permanent water and having easy access to a mix of seasonal and permanent floodplains. Shumba Camp comprises six spacious luxury safari tents on raised platforms with spectacular views of the surrounding plains.

The Busanga Plains are extensive floodplains interspersed with tree-islands and edged with miombo woodland. As the dry season progresses and the floodplains dry up, large herds of puku, lechwe and wildebeest begin to move onto the plains to graze, followed by other plains game ranging from zebra and buffalo to roan and oribi. Predators include resident prides of lion, cheetah and occasionally wild dog.

Activities in the Shumba Camp have the option of game drives in and around the Plains and night drives provide the added excitement of the nocturnal wonders of the area. With a maximum of 12 guests in the camp at any one time, great emphasis is placed on the "guided" experience - being led by qualified, enthusiastic people with in-depth knowledge of the area and its wildlife.

Minimum age for walking safaris is 12 years. This is a bush camp in the middle of the Busanga Plains where animals roam freely, sometimes close to the camp.

Safari Activities from Shumba Camp are focussed on game drives, night drives and also specific birding trips. Walking safaris are also an option where guests get the chance to explore the smaller signs of the bush, and will learn about tracks and spoor; although these tend to be shorter and taken closer to camp. The camp also has a revolutionary swamp boat, which can travel in very shallow water meaning that at the start of the season, when many routes are impassable, game activities can still be taken.

Experience The birdlife is thrilling in its diversity and numbers with nearly 500 species recorded. The Kafue National Park host to elegant Grey Crowned Cranes and Fülleborn's Longclaw is another speciality here. Other key species include Ross's Turaco, Schalow's Turaco, African Finfoot, Half-collared Kingfisher, Red-throated Twinspot, Böhm's Bee-eater, Black-backed Barbet, Brown Firefinch, Sooty Chat and Western Banded Snake-Eagle to name but a few.
