Venezuela Paria Peninsula

Paria Peninsula in northern Venezuela, is a large peninsula on the Caribbean Sea. It’s characterised by beautiful beaches lined with coconut palms, forested mountains and savannahs. The seaside town of Carúpano serves as a gateway to nearby towns such as Rio Caribe, with beautiful colonial buildings. Further east, Playa Medina is the state's best, yet isolated beach with soft golden sand. Across the Gulf of Paria is the island of Trinidad & Tabago.

Travel through the vast plains of Llanos and witness a myriad of flora and fauna. Adventure into the Venezuelan Andes and admire the high plains covered in bright flowers, with shimmering lakes and villages. Explore the city of Merida, framed by the snow-capped peaks and take the world’s highest and longest cable car- the infamous Teleferico. Next to the Paria Peninsula characterised by beautiful beaches, thickly lined with swaying coconut palms and small colonial coastal towns.

It passes through dry forests, grasslands, and plains – that it floods seasonally – before it disperses into a river delta of swamp forests and coastal mangroves as it approaches the Atlantic.

There are over 300 species of birds (including scarlet ibis, hoatzin, screamers, soldier storks, spoonbills and many more) and jaguars, ocelots, anteaters, honey bears, capybaras and alligators, in an environment still relatively undisturbed by man.

Getting There The Avior and SBA Airlines offer direct flights to Miami but not to any other US or European destinations. European carriers such as Air France, Iberia and Air Europa operate direct flights from mainland Europe. Nearly all international visitors arrive at Caracas' Aeropuerto Internacional Simón Bolívar in Maiquetía, 26km from Caracas. The national carrier is Conviasa.

When to go Venezuela’s proximity to the Equator allows few climatic variations making it a year-round destination. The best time however, is the dry season, which runs from December to April. The wet season runs from May to November and is not all that bad for some sights, including the famous Angel Falls that are certainly more impressive in the wet season.

In Los Llanos, wildlife spotting is much more abundant during the dry season, when the animals congregate at the few watering holes, and hordes of pesky mosquitoes make walking very unpleasant during the wet season. Also Guayana region is more comfortable during this dry season, though Angel Falls tends to be fuller and more spectacular during the wet season.
