Guatemala Birding Tour

Birdwatching in Guatemala is very satisfying best due high diversity of birds with a high degree of regional endemism. In the highlands, the pine-oak forest, inhabits many interesting regional endemic species such as the pink headed warbler, belted flycatcher, blue throated motmot etc. At a private reserve in the cloud forest near Los Tarrales, birdwatching includes the elusive Resplendent Quetzal, cabanis tanager and a host of other birds including hummingbirds, orioles, flycatchers and trogons.

Travelling north, near Sayaxche town and Petexbatun Lake, there are spots to watch wildlife and aquatic birds. In the rainforest surrounding the Tikal National Park, and the nearby Yaxha National Park, with over 400 species of birds, form an important birdwatching area in Guatemala. You can hope to see such species as the oscillated Turkey, Yucatan Jay, Black Catbird, Rose Throated Tanager, Orange breasted Falcon etc.

What to Know
  • At Los Tarrales Cloud Forest take a tour to the habitat of the Horned Guan and the species like Resplendent Quetzal.
  • Near Atitlan, look for Orange-billed Nightingale-Thrush, Rusty Sparrow, Squirrel Cuckoo, White-throated Swift and Black-vented Oriole.

Day 1 – Arrive
Antigua, Guatemala Meet and greet on arrival at Guatemala City airport and private transfer to Antigua.

Day 2 – Bird watching Tour
Atitlan With your private guide and driver, take an early morning transfer to the highlands Pine Forest area. There’s a good chance of spotting the endemic Rufous-collared Thrush, Bushy-crested Jay, Black-headed Siskin, Painted Redstart, Greater Pewee, Eastern Bluebird, and White-eared Hummingbird.  Private transfer to Lake Atitlan.

Day 3 – Volcano Tour
Atitlan Today we transfer across the lake to the San Pedro Volcano in search of the Horned Guan and other species of the area such as the pink headed warbler, belted flycatcher, blue throated motmot etc. Picnic lunch will be provided en route to allow plenty of opportunity for bird watching.

Day 4 – Cloud Forest Tour
Atitlan After early morning bird watching at the lakeshore, we take a private transfer to a beautiful Los Tarrales reserve located southeast of Lake Atitlan. It has both coffee plantation and cloud forest scenery for a variety of bird watching opportunities.

Day 5 – In Search of Resplendent Quetzal
Los Tarrales Cloud Forest After early morning birdwatching at Los Tarrales we transfer to a private reserve in the cloud forest. Here we can hope to see the elusive Resplendent Quetzal, cabanis tanager (Tangara cabanisi) and a host of other birds including hummingbirds, orioles, flycatchers, trogons and motmots..

Day 6 – Rainforest Tour
Flores After an early morning bird watching session we transfer to Guatemala City where we can enjoy a visit to some of the museums and have lunch before boarding our flight to Flores in the northern rainforest. Here we transfer to our hotel in the rainforest near Flores for overnight. If required, we can arrange night hikes / wildlife spotting trips.

Day 7 – Aquatic birds
Chiminos Penninsular After an early morning birdwatching session we transfer to Sayaxche town and board a boat for transfer to the Chiminos Island Lodge. Along the way we will have a chance to spot a variety of wildlife and aquatic birds. In the late afternoon there will be another chance to sport birds on the Petexbatun Lake.

Day 8 – Aguateca Tour
Tikal National Park Early morning bird watching in the Chiminos Lodge area. Then we transfer to the archaeology site at Aguateca to explore the site and look for a variety of birds in the area. As the day draws to a close we will take the boat back to Sayaxche and transfer back to Tikal National Park.

Day 9 – Tikal Jungle
Tikal National Park Today we enjoy a full day of birdwatching in the Tikal National Park. As well as enjoying the site itself we will hope to see such species as the oscillated Turkey, Yucatan Jay, Black Catbird, Rose Throated Tanager, Orange breasted Falcon etc.

Day 10 – Depart
Guatemala City Guests will transfer to Flores airport for the short flight to Guatemala City in time to connect with international flights. (B)

When to go Guatemala has a very good weather all year round with only two seasons. November through April (Dry) has dazzling blue skies and warm sunshine. May through October (Wet) is the rainy season with a short break between July and August. During this time, you can often expect sunny mornings and showers falling predominantly in the afternoon, usually lasting no longer than a couple of hours, with the worst of the rain falling in September and October.

Getting There Most flights to Guatemala from the UK are routed via US hub cities: Atlanta, Houston, New York or Miami. Airfares always depend on the season, with the highest being from Christmas to February, around Easter and in July and August. Other options include flying via Madrid on Iberia, via Amsterdam and Panama with KLM, or via Mexico with a number of airlines and then on to Guatemala with a Mexican airline. Flores airport, near Tikal, has a few flights from Belize City and Cancún.
