Machu Picchu in Luxury

Cusco, a city in the Peruvian Andes, was the historic capital of the Inca Empire. It’s known for its extensive Inca ruins and Spanish colonial architecture. The cultural heart of the city is Plaza de Armas with a 17th-century baroque Cathedral, built on the site of the Palace of Viracocha. La Compania de Jesús with its twin-towered exterior, has rich fine murals and paintings. Santo Domingo built on the walls of the Temple of the Sun (Qoricancha), has the best Inca stonework.

Begin in Lima, Peru's sprawling capital city. Tour its excellent museums, fine restaurants and vibrant nightlife. Private cooking lessons, a ceviche-making class can be arranged, upon request. Transfer to  Cusco, and explore the Sacred Valley of the Incas (Urubamba Valley). Continue to Machu Picchu and take a private tour of this magical Lost City of the Incas. Next, fly to Iquitos for a three-night luxury expedition cruise in the Amazon River Basin.

Getting There There are no direct flights from London to Peru but there are direct flights to Lima from Madrid, Paris and Amsterdam. Airlines with regular services to Peru include Air Canada, American Airlines, Iberia and KLM and take anywhere between 16 and 22 hours. The principal international airlines for Peru are Lan and Avianca.

When to go The best time to visit Peru is May to September, which is a dry season in the highlands. The western side of the Andes are very clear, warm, and dry for the greater part of the year. The Inca Trail has limited spaces hence travellers should book at least six to nine months in advance. From October to December, the dry season comes to an end, but conditions are still pleasant. An abundance of birdlife and flora, particularly orchids, can be enjoyed in Peru’s cloud forests at this time.

January to April is the rainy season. The eastern slope of the Andes, like the Amazon basin, experiences very heavy rainfall, which extends from January through April. Travellers however visit the highlands all the rear round since it rarely rains for more than a few hours and there is still plenty of sunshine to enjoy. During February, the Inca Trail is closed. However, Machu Picchu remains open but it is a bit more challenging for those wishing to trek.
