MALAWI LAKE, MALAWI
Chintheche Inn is set on the western shores of central Lake Malawi. The pristine sandy beaches curve endlessly away to the horizon - palm-fringed, dotted by fishing villages and patches of lowland tropical forest. It's no wonder that Chintheche Inn is located in what is considered to be the most verdant region of Malawi. There are ten comfortable, brightly furnished rooms with on-suite bathrooms, all facing onto the beach.
Lake Malawi supports over 2000 species of freshwater - a greater variety than any other lake on Earth, more than all of Europe and North America combined. The majority of these are colourful fish called cichlids (locally named mbuna) of which Lake Malawi contains more than 400 types, or 30% of all known species.
Activities at Chintheche Inn are directed at both watersports on the lake and land based activities in the nearby tropical forest. Knowledgeable local guides are on hand to lead birding walks or hikes in the area. Watersports include swimming and snorkelling and for the intrepid, a trip out to deeper waters on a fishing expedition with local fisherman can be arranged. The nearby Bandawe Mission also offers a fascinating peek into the country's colonial past.

When to go Malawi has a moderate to sub-tropical climate with three distinct seasons: from November to March is the rainy season, April to July is Malawi's winter, when the weather is cool and dry, and August to October is summer, when the weather is hot and dry. Lake Malawi is at its clearest during the summer months, which are also best for bird watching, but game viewing is best in the winter months, when the bushveld is dry and animals seek out the waterholes.
