UNLEASH IT: IN PRIVATE CHALETS THAT GAZE OUT OVER THE LAIKIPIA PLATEAU.

The Review

Considered the gateway to Kenya's wild and scarcely populated northern frontier country, Laikipia's ranches are home to both cattle and wildlife. In recent years the Laikipia’s ranches have become a valuable asset, with many of them establishing guest lodges. This has resulted in a hugely positive impact on the land, its wildlife and conservation.

It is on this basis that Segera functions. Located right in the centre of these highlands, Segera plays an important role in the conservation of these lands. Guests will have the opportunity to appreciate this rare sanctuary in exceptional luxury.

Your Stay
Segera Camp is aimed at travellers who don't want to give up the luxury but are also cautious of conservation and sustainability. This camp in Kenya's Laikipia region runs on solar energy. Guests bunk in six thatched-roofed villas outfitted with African artwork and featuring a Jacuzzi bath just outside the hut and sunk into a private wooden-platform deck. The Zeitz Sculpture Garden is nearby too, stocked with exquisite installations from across Africa and its diaspora.

Within the privacy of the villas, a large bedroom and en-suite bathroom fill the upstairs space under spectacular timber trusses. A private sun deck in the garden offers comfortable sun loungers for soaking up the African sun and a swing bed for whiling the hours away.

On the property are stables, a bar, and a library with local art hung on its walls, along with big-ticket amenities like a spa, gym, and pool. Meals can be taken outside whether on a deck, in a sun lounger or protected from the sun under a gazebo.

Wildlife
Segera's rolling savannah and woodland also play host to good densities of charismatic species. Predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah and spotted hyaena can be seen; numbers of elephant, buffalo, eland, reticulated giraffe and beisa oryx often form a backdrop to the wide plains; and there is a wealth of plains game including zebra, Grant's gazelle, Defassa waterbuck and impala.

Experience
Activities facilitated through a Villa Attendant, are flexible and can be tailor-made to one’s requirements and preferences. These include cultural tours, bush walks, game drives and spending time with game scouts and anti-poaching staff.

For guests keen to explore further afield, helicopter flights showcasing the expanse and contrast of the country at locations like Samburu and Mount Kenya can also be arranged. Guests are further spoiled for choice with a spa, gym and central pool.

Getting There

The international flight to Nairobi takes about 8-hour 30-minute. From Nairobi Wilson Airport there are daily flights to Nanyuki or you can book a private charter flight (1-hour), directly to Mukenya airstrip. By road, Segera is a 2-hour drive (or a short private charter) from Nanyuki and a 5-hour drive from Nairobi.

Laikipia Plateau

The Laikipia Plateau, lying north of the iconic Aberdares mountain range and Mount Kenya, is considered one of Kenya's richest ecosystems and the fertile breadbasket of the Kenyan people. Four rivers, of which one is perennial, cut through the landscape, making for an even more compelling area for animals and people alike. Large numbers of residing wildlife roam freely in these fenceless valleys, which also support agriculture.

Laikipia also forms part of the much broader 56,000-square-kilometre Ewaso ecosystem, Kenya's most extensive wildlife haven after the famous Tsavo National Park. Interestingly, the wildlife population densities of the region are comparable only to that of the Maasai Mara. Segera's rolling savannah and woodland also play host to good densities of species.

With over 365 bird species, it is a birdwatchers paradise.

When to go

The best wildlife viewing months in Kenya are during the dry season that runs from late June to October. It is also a high season and most safari parks get crowded and booked in advance.  The rainy season – between mid-March to June and again between October and December – is also worth considering if you would like to avoid high prices and enjoy watching wildlife at your own pace. For Masai Mara wildebeest migration the best time is between mid-August and late October when the herds have returned from their months in Tanzania's Serengeti. Kenya beach destinations are open year round and are mostly hot and humid but best avoided during the mid-March to late May when temperatures and rainfall are at their highest.

Visa
British, US and nationals of most European countries require visa to enter Kenya.
It takes between 2-3 days to get a tourist visa and costs £30 (Multiple entry £60). You require a passport valid for the next 6 months with two completed visa application forms, two passport photographs, an invitation letter or hotel reservation and a copy of airline tickets/itinerary and a Yellow fever certificate. Multiple entry visas may be issued on application for British citizens only. You may require a prepaid envelope.
Consular office is open Monday to Thursday 9.00am to 12.30.

Health
You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while travelling to any destination. Some vaccines may also be required for travel. Check with your doctor (ideally, 4-6 weeks) before your trip to get vaccines or medicines you may need.

Please note:
Yellow Fever certificate is required IF travelling from a country with risk of YFV transmission.
Malaria is present in all areas (including game parks) <2,500 m (8,202 ft) but none in the highly urbanized, central part of the city of Nairobi.
