Central, Myanmar (Burma)
Myanmar highlights are the major cities of Yangon, Bagan and Mandalay along with its beautiful Inle Lake. If travelling from Bangkok, it is recommended to arrive Mandalay and then travel to Bagan and Inle Lake, and leave from Mandalay. But if you arrive in Yangon, a relaxed tour could cover Yangon with Bagan and Inle Lake, then fly out from Yangon. You can still do Yangon-Bagan-Mandalay-Inle-Yangon within a week, but it's too much of a rush.
This 9-day tour of Myanmar (Burma) includes the country's most popular destinations. It features the dynamic city of Yangon, the fascinating ruins of Bagan, the monasteries and temples of Mandalay and the floating villages in Inle Lake. All touring is with your own private guide and driver, and accommodation is at the country's best luxury hotels.
TRAVEL UNTAMED ON THIS 9-DAY MYANMAR HIGHLIGHTS TOUR...
And, experience Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake.
This tour features the dynamic city of Yangon, the fascinating ruins of Bagan, the monasteries and temples of Mandalay and the floating villages in Inle Lake. All touring is with your own private guide and driver.
Begin in Yangon, the capital city. With your private guide and driver, tour cultural highlights such as the glittering Shwe Dagon Pagoda – Kipling’s “golden mystery... a beautiful winking wonder”. Perched on a hill like a gold beacon, huge and bell-shaped it dominates the city and the surrounding countryside. Also, visit Bogyoke (Scott) Market, which has a vast selection of traditional Burmese handicrafts. Travelling through the city you will realise the British, Burmese, Chinese, and Indian influences; it is studded with its past colonial architecture now mixed with high-rise buildings.
However, Yangon continues to be a city of the past, as seen by its longyi-wearing pedestrians, its street vendors, and its pungent smells. Travel in a horse-drawn cart to pottery workshops and markets, and see the town’s landmark Shwesandaw Pagoda. One day, enjoy a privately guided boat excursion along the waterways of the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) Delta to Twante, a renowned pottery village.
Next, fly to awe-inspiring Bagan, where thousands of pagodas and temples nestle within an eight-mile curve of the Irrawaddy River. This site of the royal capital of the first Burmese Empire once held 5,000 pagodas, built by rulers and subjects alike to gain merit in future lives. The high tide of construction began in the 11 century, then ebbed within 250 years as Mongol invasion and internal conflict ended Burma’s golden age.
One day take an optional private boat on the Ayeryarwady River to enjoy views of pagodas and daily life, ride in a horse-drawn carriage among the temples of Bagan at sunset or take a private excursion to Mount Popa, an extinct volcano that’s considered the home of Burma’s most powerful nats (animist spirits). We can also book a memorable hot air balloon ride over the temples as the sun rises.
Continue to fabled Mandalay. This was their capital, until the British captured and exiled King Thebaw in 1885. For most Burmese Mandalay, along with the ancient capitals of Amarapura, Sagaing, Ava, and classical Bagan, is the cultural and religious heart of Myanmar. With your export guide explore the shrines and temples that stud this land in amazing numbers. One day, take a private excursion to Ava, Mingun and Sagaing—all ancient capitals to see some of its ancient pagodas and monasteries, and also visit a nearby pottery village.
Next, visit the massive fresh water Inle Lake, home of the Intha people. Rimmed with high hills, stilted villages inhabited by the Intha people, known for leg-rowing their flat-bottomed boats. For many travellers, Inle is heaven on earth, a place to while away the days canoeing, cycling and walking through the lush countryside. For others, it is a place to meditate.
Return to Yangon for overnight and connect with onward flight.

Getting There Myanmar has two international airports: In the capital Yangon and at Mandalay. Due to the lack of travel services in Myanmar most airlines fly to Yangon via Bangkok, Kaula Lumpur or Singapore. Also, there are flights connecting Chiang Mai (in Thailand) to Yangon and Mandalay. It is best to check prices for flights to Bangkok and from there to Yangon return as buying two tickets can be cheaper. We suggest that you book in advance to get the best rates for flights.
Visa British citizens travelling to Myanmar can get a Myanmar visa on arrival. The new e-visa application service allows applicants to fill in the e-form and submit the payment through a secure payment gateway with a credit card. This takes about 3 days to receive a visa approval letter that you can print and take with your passport to a designated airport.
