Visit the Natural History Centre, Butterfly Farm, archaeological sites and the nearby Rainforest Medicinal Trail. In Placencia, take a full-day wildlife trip to Monkey River. Caracol, located in the Cayo district and just 2.5 hours from San Ignacio is the largest archaeological site in Belize. This Classic Period complex covers 30-square miles of thick, high-canopy jungle and includes five plazas, an astronomic observatory and over 35,000 buildings that have been identified. The loftiest among them, a massive pyramid (Caana) capped by three temples rises over 140 feet above the jungle floor. Located deep within the Chiquibil Forest Reserve, it is great for bird-watching and wild fauna. A visit to Caracol is often combined with a stop at the Río on Pools and other attractions in the Mountain Pine Ridge area.
Placencia is home to white sand beaches, virgin mangrove-fringed lagoons, a wilderness of coral-studded cayes, nearby jungle rivers and Maya ruins, and pristine rainforest - as well as Garifuna, Creole and Mayan cultures. Spend your days water diving, fishing, snorkelling or just relaxing on the beach, and your nights at the many interesting restaurants and watering holes that feature local food, culture and live music. High season begins mid-December and lasts until late April. During May and June whale sharks come to spawn in the nearby waters.
Tikal National Park is one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Americas. While totally different in architecture and setting from the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru, it is just as spectacular. Situated in the jungle of northern Guatemala, the ruins are part of the much larger Tikal National Park. The Maya structures occupy a large area (approximately 10 sq mi/25 sq km). So far, more than 3,000 palaces, temples, shrines, ceremonial platforms, ballcourts, plazas and residences have been mapped.

When to go Belize enjoys a subtropical climate with distinct wet and dry seasons.

November through April (Dry): This is the best time to visit Belize when the days and nights are cooler. In the tropics it is not unusual to have rain in the dry season - it just falls in shorter spurts. Water temperatures along the barrier reef range from the mid-70s to the mid-80s. The driest months are February and March. Out on the Cayes you'll enjoy tropical breezes wafting through the palm trees, providing you with natural air conditioning!

April and May (Dry): These months could be your second choice to visit Belize, as it's drier and water visibility is excellent.

June through November (Wet): During these months there are sporadic downpours that occur without warning. Belize lies in the hurricane belt and these have often come later in the season, between August and the end of October.

Visas Citizens of the US, European Union and Commonwealth countries do not require visas if they have a passport and return ticket. Most other nationalities require a visa.

British nationals don’t need a visa to enter Belize. On arrival, you’ll be allowed to enter for a limited period. Any extension to remain in the country will incur a fee.

Passport validity: Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of entry into Belize.
