Review

We begin in Arusha, Tanzania’s premier ‘Safari Town’. Fly to Manyara Airstrip and transfer to Ngorongoro Crater, located at the eastern edge of the Serengeti in northern Tanzania. Nearly three million years old and the largest unbroken caldera in the world, it is home to over 3,000 animals with a high concentration of predators including countless cheetah, serval, wildebeest, gazelle, zebra, leopard, and jackal.

Stay at the luxurious Ngorongoro Serena Lodge. Perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist, camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, this Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. The lodge is sensitively constructed so as to take nothing from its environment and yet afford endless vistas over the heat-shimmering reaches of the crater below. This boulder-built lodge hugs the crater’s rim, linked by rope-lashed timber walkways that skirt the buttressed roots of ancient liana-hung trees.

Next to the Serengeti National Park, famous for the annual wildebeest and zebra migration. The word "Serengeti" comes from the Maasai word siringet, which literally means "an extended area." Because the park large grassland (broken by rock outcroppings and stands of acacia trees), it's an excellent place to observe animal migrations. During June and July, mind-boggling numbers of hoofed animals make the long trek from Tanzania to Kenya, allowing for superb wildlife viewing.

Stay at the Serengeti Serena Lodge. Set high on the saddle of tree-clad ridge commanding panoramic views over the endlessly rolling reaches and volcanic reefs of the Serengeti, this Lodge is the ultimate fusion of traditional African architecture and world-class style. Drawing its inspiration from the circular ‘Rondavel’ dwellings and winding paths of a traditional Maasai village, the Lodge features thickly-thatched, stone-built rooms, spaciously set amongst groves of indigenous trees that are cooled by sparkling streams and papyrus-fringed ponds.

Then visit the vast grasslands of the Maasai Mara, Kenya. The open savannah, woodlands, and tree-lined rivers create and eco-system that supports huge numbers of bird and mammal species. Lion are found in abundance throughout the park, as are elephant, giraffe, zebra and a wide variety of gazelle species. Cheetah and leopard are regularly seen and, if lucky, you might also find rhino.

During the migrations, the wildebeests move first, then the zebras. Lions, hyenas and scavenger birds follow and feast on the sick, young, old or weary. Getting There There are regular flights to Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro (near Arusha) from South Africa, Europe and the United States. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is situated 46km/29mi east of Arusha, the starting point for Tanzania's most popular Northern Safari Circuit.

Some domestic flights out of Arusha will leave from Kilimanjaro International Airport, but most flights to reserves leave from the much smaller Arusha Airport (ARK) located 8km/5mi west of town. From either airport you can catch an internal flight to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Zanzibar and most other destinations in Tanzania.

Tanzania's main airport is Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) located 13km/8mi southwest of Dar es Salaam. The latter is the entry-point for visitors to the southern parks and Zanzibar.

When to go January to March: The best time to visit the Serengeti when the grazers are calving. These are also the warmest months.

April and May: This is the 'green season' with lush vegetation, full rivers and lakes, and abundant birdlife and wild flowers, as well as baby animals. Best to avoid, as ‘long rains’ can be heavy and can make unsealed road travel difficult.

June to October (dry season): These are the coolest months when the weather is less humid, but still warm. It's a good time for game viewing and ideal for walking safaris, as animals start to congregate around shrinking water sources. The best time to witness the wildebeest migration is from August to October that usually takes place after the long rains.

November onwards (rainy season): Things get increasingly wet and sticky. Within this framework, different areas have different patterns. Whale shark season is October to March.

Visas All British passport holders need a tourist or business visa to enter Tanzania. You are advised to obtain one before travelling by applying at least a month ahead to the Tanzanian High Commission.

It is possible to get a tourist or business visa for a single entry on arrival at main ports of entry to Tanzania, but this is subject to the fulfilment of all immigration requirements. You won’t be able to get a multiple entry visa on arrival.

Passport validity: Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of your visa application.
