Review

This private tour focuses on three regions of Beijing, Guilin and Hong Kong. It is designed to balance the cultural touring in China’s greatest cities of Beijing and Hong Kong with soft-adventure hiking and biking activities through beautiful rural region of Guilin. All touring is private, with your own private guides and drivers.

Begin in Beijing, world-renowned for historical and cultural magnificence. With your private guide, visit the fabulous ancient buildings, religious temples and imperial masterpieces such as the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace and lesser-known temples.

Travel by rickshaw or opt to bicycle down the narrow hutongs (lanes) of a traditional residential neighbourhood. Spend one day hiking along a less-touristy section of the Great Wall of China. Stay at China’s top luxury properties and dine on traditional specialties at favourite family-run restaurants.

Fly to Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) a world cultural heritage site and one of China’s top ten scenic areas. Since ancient times the mountain has been famous for odd shaped pines, grotesque rocks, the sea of clouds, hot springs, and snow in winter.

Spend the day exploring trails that offer unbelievable views of beautiful peaks that have inspired Chinese artists for centuries. Visit the nearby UNESCO-listed villages of Hongcun and Xidi, which are filled with traditional Chinese architecture. Also visit Tunxi Ancient Street, where historic buildings house interesting shops and restaurants.

Next to Guilin, one of China's best known cities, famed for its beautiful landscape of limestone mountains, clear waters, caves and rocks. Standing lofty and firm, the hills in Guilin seem to rise up into the sky. Cruise the Li River to Yangshuo, China’s most beautiful river journey and called the “hundred mile art gallery”.

The picturesque scenery is punctuated with bizarrely - shaped pinnacles, sprays of bamboo lining up the riverbanks and fishermen with their cormorants. There will be time for walking and biking activities.

Continue to China’s rural, southwestern Yunnan Province. Spend several nights at a luxury resort in Lijiang, a world heritage site with historic and cultural significance. Explore Lijiang's charming old town that has long been a centre of Naxi culture and in recent years has become a major tourist attraction.

Of course, the tourism boom has changed the city but it’s still common to find traditional wooden Naxi houses some of which now converted into shops. Options available for walking or biking.

The tour concludes in Hong Kong, one of Asia’s most attractive and exciting cities. During touring with your expert private guide, ride the Peak Tram to the top of Hong Kong Island, dine on dim sum at teahouses, explore local markets to learn about traditional Chinese medicine and unusual food products, and ride in a traditional sampan boat across Aberdeen Harbour.

Perhaps watch a horse race at Happy Valley Racetrack, enjoy private appointments at leading antique shops or with noted designers, or get fitted for custom clothing at our favourite tailors.

Getting There Beijing Capital International Airport, about 12 miles (19 kilometres) northeast of the city centre, is served by numerous international carriers from the UK. Taxis at the airport are plentiful; the ride into town costs about $20 and can take anywhere from half an hour to an hour and a half, depending on traffic. For the adventuresome there's also a train that whisks you in 23 minutes to a fairly central station in Beijing from which you can cab it to your hotel.

When to go The best time to visit China is during autumn (September to early November) when the skies are clear and the weather is at its comfortable best. The days are warm, sunny and dry with clear skies and pleasantly cool evenings. Local Beijingers describe this short season as tiāngāo qìshuǎng (literally ‘the sky is high and the air is fresh’).

The second-best time is spring, late March to mid-May, when winds blow away the pollution but also sometimes bring clouds of scouring sand for a day or two, turning the sky a livid yellow (great for pictures). From May onwards the mercury begins to surge well over 30°C until the rains arrive. The months of July and August are sultry and humid.

Passport/Visa Visas are required to enter, exit or transit through Chinese territories. The most common is a single entry 30-day visa. Multiple entry, 60-day and 90-day visas are also available. Passports must have a minimum of six months validity. Enquiries should be directed to the nearest Chinese embassy or consulate.
