Review

Begin with an overnight stay at a luxury lodge near Arusha, an area of lush, mountainous landscapes, Maasai settlements and coffee plantations. Continue to Ngorongoro Crater, home to a wide variety of wildlife, including the Big Five as well as hippopotamus, which are otherwise uncommon in the area.

Stay at a luxury lodge perched on the crater’s rim, and enjoy spectacular views and exciting game drives in the crater. Here the wildlife coexists with semi-nomadic Maasai pastoralists practicing traditional livestock grazing. If desired, we can also arrange for cultural touring; such as visits to villages of the semi-nomadic Maasai who coexist with the wildlife, practicing traditional livestock grazing.

Family members of all ages will enjoy an exciting game drive to Ngorongoro Crater and visiting Lake Manyara National Park for game viewing and to see its hippo pool at sunset. At the hotel, also enjoy time to relax by the pool, tour the coffee production facility and learn about the cultivation and roasting process, and partake in other activities such as horseback riding and mountain biking. If desired, we can also arrange for cultural touring—such as visits to local Maasai villages, markets and art galleries, or the Olduvai Gorge—or philanthropic activities.

Next, fly to Singita Grumeti Reserves, a private concession on the edge of the Serengeti National Park. Spend three nights in the most luxurious accommodation, with beautiful, colonial-style decor and private infinity pools. The area is known for its abundant wildlife—including elephants, leopards and plentiful lions—as well as its ideal location, which offers prime opportunities to view the annual great wildebeest migration.

AwimAway can arrange other preferred luxury safari properties of your choice including mobile camp safaris, private air charters to lodges throughout Africa, special experiences such as helicopter or hot-air balloon rides and other philanthropic activities.

Getting There There are regular flights to Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro (near Arusha) from South Africa, Europe and the United States. Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is situated 46km/29mi east of Arusha, the starting point for Tanzania's most popular Northern Safari Circuit.

Some domestic flights out of Arusha will leave from Kilimanjaro International Airport, but most flights to reserves leave from the much smaller Arusha Airport (ARK) located 8km/5mi west of town. From either airport you can catch an internal flight to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Zanzibar and most other destinations in Tanzania.

Tanzania's main airport is Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) located 13km/8mi southwest of Dar es Salaam. The latter is the entry-point for visitors to the southern parks and Zanzibar.

When to go January to March: The best time to visit the Serengeti when the grazers are calving. These are also the warmest months.

April and May: This is the 'green season' with lush vegetation, full rivers and lakes, and abundant birdlife and wild flowers, as well as baby animals. Best to avoid, as ‘long rains’ can be heavy and can make unsealed road travel difficult.

June to October (dry season): These are the coolest months when the weather is less humid, but still warm. It's a good time for game viewing and ideal for walking safaris, as animals start to congregate around shrinking water sources. The best time to witness the wildebeest migration is from August to October that usually takes place after the long rains.

November onwards (rainy season): Things get increasingly wet and sticky. Within this framework, different areas have different patterns. Whale shark season is October to March.

Visas All British passport holders need a tourist or business visa to enter Tanzania. You are advised to obtain one before travelling by applying at least a month ahead to the Tanzanian High Commission.

It is possible to get a tourist or business visa for a single entry on arrival at main ports of entry to Tanzania, but this is subject to the fulfilment of all immigration requirements. You won’t be able to get a multiple entry visa on arrival.

Passport validity: Your passport should be valid for a minimum period of 6 months from the date of your visa application.
