Cuba Honeymoon

Las Terrazas, in Cuba’s Pinar del Rio region, is a nature reserve amid the Sierra del Rosario mountains. This is Castro's Eden, a paradise he dreamt up after the revolution and ordered a reforestation programme. The natural terracing on the River San Juan allowed the teal waters to spill over into natural pools. Today, Las Terrazas (the terraces), has a fecund landscape with flowing rivers, soaring Royal Palms, and lush, rampant forests.

Trinidad on the southern coast, known for Spanish colonial architecture has a fine beach of Playa Ancón. Further in the east, Holguin, Cuba’s third largest city is the birthplace of Cuban music and offers excellent ecotourism excursions. Baracoa, at the eastern tip of the island, is surrounded by secluded beaches and virgin rainforest. But it’s in Santiago de Cuba, the cultural capital of the island, where you get a true sense of Cuba’s history and cultural diversity.

Review

Experience the vibrancy of Cuban people and history in its energetic capital, Havana. Take the Hemingway Trail and by night, sample Cuban cuisine and the famous Mojito cocktail whilst appreciating the traditional vibrant music and dance.

Enjoy nature and culture excursions in Las Terrazas. Then travel through the picturesque Vinales Valley, surrounded by Karst cliffs rising 400m high, like islands from the bottom of the valley (the mogotes). Although much smaller in size in comparison to China's Yangshuo, Guilin, but driving into this valley by road is a spectacular sight.

Continue to Trinidad, a beautiful Heritage site on the Central South Coast. With its cobbled streets, terracotta rooftops and pastel coloured houses, we will explore this beautiful city in the morning when the light is good for photography and the temperature still comfortable. Stay in an eco-resort situated deep in the mountains near Mayari, then journey to Baracoa to marvel at the archaeological park of Parque Natural Majayara. Relax on idyllic beaches in Playa Maguana, and experience the spectacular Biosphere Reserves of Cucillas del Toa and Baconao.

Next, travel to Santiago de Cuba, the sizzling hot former capital of Cuba, known for its colonial architecture and revolutionary history and the birthplace of Light Rum. For rum lovers and visitors eager to unravel a major part of Cuba’s cultural roots, it is easy to miss out on sites of historical interest, and try an exceptional blend, named like the ‘Santiago de Cuba 500 Rum’ launched in celebration of its 500 years of existence in 2015. It’s worth trying!
Getting There

Virgin Atlantic is the only airline operating direct scheduled flights to Cuba, with two services a week from Gatwick.

Various airlines fly to Havana from London via European cities, including Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam and Rome. Air France is the most versatile option, with daily flights from London Heathrow to Havana via Paris. Iberia and KLM also fly from Heathrow, via Madrid and Amsterdam respectively. Other airlines flying direct from European cities include Cubana, KLM, Air Berlin and Air Europa. Though Cubana tends to offer the least expensive flights on the market, they have a justified reputation for overbooking, overzealous enforcement of the baggage weight limit.

When to go Cuba is an all year round destination and there isn't a bad time to visit Cuba. It has primarily a tropical climate where temperature rarely falls below 27 degrees C (81 F) and reaches a maximum 32 C (90 F) and although hot all year round, there is a very pleasant breeze.

There are only two seasons: the hot and rainy season runs from May to November (May-June are the wettest months) and the dry season (winter) runs from December to April. It is the time when Europeans go there in pursuit of the southern sun. Avoid the peak hurricanes season (September-October) and the busy periods (July and August) when the Cubans take their holidays.

Visas Make sure you get the right visa for your visit. As well as tourist visas, there are other visa categories for different types of travellers. If you’re entering Cuba as a tourist, you’ll need to get a tourist card before you travel.

Passport validity: Your passport should be valid for the proposed duration of your stay. No additional period of validity beyond this is required.
