Bhutan Samtengang Trek

Samtengang Trek is one of the easier lower altitude treks in Bhutan. It explores some of Bhutan’s beautiful forests, remote historical and religious sites and isolated villages in and above the Punakha & Wangdi Valley. It also offers stunning views of Himalayan peaks including Jumolhari (7315m), Kang Bum Peak located above Gaza (6300m) and Tiger Mountain (Gangcheta 6840m) north of Laya. Due Samtengang trail infested with leaches during warm weather, it is recommended for winter.

Begin with Paro, and take a comprehensive tour of this interesting resort town with your private guide. Continue to Thimphu, and explore its traditional arts and crafts, various small museums and cultural sites. In Punakha, the ancient winter capital, embark on a two-night, private Semtengang trek. On return, relax at a peaceful, luxury lodge in Gangtey, and enjoy watching wildlife including black-necked cranes before returning to Paro for a final night.

And, take a two-night trekking experience with private guide & cook.

The Review

This private tour to Bhutan is ideal for anyone seeking to experience a short adventure beyond the luxuries of a hotel. Enjoy a two-night private trekking experience, complete with private trek guide, pack horses and cook. High-quality camping equipment and provisions will be provided. Starting in Punakha, the trek ends in Gangtey valley (also known as Phobjikha) where you stay 2-nights to view the endangered black-knecked cranes.

Begin with Paro, the wide-open valley of Bhutan; a land with pure water, pure air and absolute pure happiness.  Tour the natural Museum filled with antique thanka paintings, textiles, weapons and Armour. Then travel to the Rinpung dzong, built in mid-17th century to defend the valley against Tibetan invaders. Hike to the famous Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest) for an hour and a half uphill. The monastery is perched on a rocky ledge with a sheer drop of nearly 4,000 feet.

Continue to Thimphu, the charming capital of Bhutan. Enjoy touring of Thimphu’s many cultural attractions; school for traditional arts and crafts, heritage museum or the post office to see the Bhutanese stamps, amongst the best in the world. Visit Buddhist highlights; the Memorial Chorten (dedicated to King’s late father), the Simtokha Dzong (now a university), and the Tashicho Dzong, which now houses government departments and ministries.

Transfer to Punakha, the ancient winter capital located in a sub-tropical valley with warm summers and pleasant winters. Visit the beautifully located Punakha Dzong built on the confluence of Pho chhu (Male river) and Mo chhu (female river).  Enjoy a peaceful walk through rural farm villages, receive a blessing from a monk or opt to hike up a mountain for beautiful panoramic views of the valley. Alternatively, relax at your luxurious farmhouse-style lodge, set among rice terraces, chilli and cabbage fields and traditional Bhutanese farmhouses.

Next, embark on a two-night private trekking experience, complete with your own private trek guide, pack horses, and a cook. The Semtengang Trek is one of Bhutan’s most beautiful low-altitude treks and passes through rural villages, farm land, fields and forests of rhododendron, and rice terraces. High-quality camping gear will be provided.

After your trek, enjoy time relax at a peaceful, luxury lodge in Gangtey. Opt for flexible touring and visit the surrounding valleys, home to the endangered and graceful black-necked cranes that fly in from northern China, Mongolia and Siberia.

Explore its secluded monasteries and temples that present a literary treasure trove, largely unharmed and still unexplored. Meet the local villagers, known as the Bjopkha (normadic people) who speak a different dialect from Dzongkha — the official language of Bhutan.

Return to Paro for a final night and connect with your onward flight to Bangkok, Kathmandu or India.

When to go Winter in Bhutan is from mid-November till mid-March, and at this time of the year the climate is dry and sunny for the most part, temperatures peaking at around 15c. in the daytime and falling below zero at night. During the spring months of March, April and May, Bhutan offers warm days and cool nights. It is a great time for treks and to watch the flora and the many birds of Bhutan.

By the middle of June, clouds begin to build up for the monsoon that arrives in July. By mid-September the monsoon clouds have all but dried and the skies begin to clear. The two-month window between October and November offers clear skies but it can be cold in the night. It is also a good time for trekking deep into the Himalayas, sitting around a camp fire and seeing the high Himalayas in the morning and evening golden light.
