Bhutan Wildlife Tour

Wildlife in Bhutan is protected in nine areas of national parks, nature reserves and wildlife sanctuaries. The huge variations in altitude; from the dense subtropical forests in the south to the snowy mountains in the north, allows an abundance of flora and fauna to thrive within Bhutan. Wildlife in the south include tiger, one horned rhino and clouded leopard. Bhutan’s central valleys are home to the Himalayan black bear, red panda and barking deer. While in the north, are snow leopard, blue sheep and Himalayan musk deer. There are over 770 species of bird.

On this Bhutan journey, you will visit Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. Visit its cultural sites and various small museums. Next, drive over a Himalayan pass to Punakha, a sub-tropical valley in central Bhutan. Then to Gangtey in Phobjikha valley, to see the rare black-necked cranes and to the Bumthang valley in the heart of the country. Visit villages, ancient temples, monasteries and view an incredible flora and fauna of this beautiful country.

The Review

This comprehensive tour of Bhutan covers the cultural highlights and wildlife. You travel across high mountain passes with great vistas of the Himalayan range and visit old monasteries in remote valleys.

Begin in Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan. Enjoy comprehensive touring of Thimphu’s many cultural attractions and important Buddhist highlights. Meet local people, learn about local traditions, explore a bustling market, and visit various small museums specialising in textiles, folk heritage, and traditional Bhutanese arts and crafts.

Next, drive through the mountains, passing the 108 stupas of Dochu La, to Punakha, the ancient winter capital located in a sub-tropical valley where rhododendron and magnolia bloom and orange and banana trees flourish. Relax at your luxurious farmhouse-style lodge, set among rice terraces, chili and cabbage fields and traditional Bhutanese farmhouses.

Drive past snow-capped mountains, protected valleys, fields and forests of rhododendron, juniper, and bamboo to Gangtey (locally known as Phobjikha). Visit the isolated valleys of Gangtey, which is home to the endangered and graceful black-necked cranes that fly in from northern China, Mongolia and Siberia. Its secluded monasteries and temples today represent a literary treasure trove that is largely unharmed and still unexplored.

Continue through dramatic landscapes en route to the Bumthang region, located in the heart of the country. Visit villages, orchards, forests, ancient temples, fortresses and monasteries—this area is considered the sacred heart of Bhutan and is the revered birthplace of many saints to whom the Bhutanese royalty trace their lineage.

Conclude the tour with three days in Paro, a resort town nestled among the Himalayas. Visit the National Museum, browse shops for Himalayan crafts and Buddhist items, and hike to Tiger's Nest, a breathtaking monastery clinging to a cliff that is one of the most important icons of Bhutan.

When to go Winter in Bhutan is from mid-November till mid-March, and at this time of the year the climate is dry and sunny for the most part, temperatures peaking at around 15c. in the daytime and falling below zero at night. During the spring months of March, April and May, Bhutan offers warm days and cool nights. It is a great time for treks and to watch the flora and the many birds of Bhutan.

By the middle of June, clouds begin to build up for the monsoon that arrives in July. By mid-September the monsoon clouds have all but dried and the skies begin to clear. The two-month window between October and November offers clear skies but it can be cold in the night. It is also a good time for trekking deep into the Himalayas, sitting around a camp fire and seeing the high Himalayas in the morning and evening golden light.
