The Review

San Jose is a sprawling metropolis, with a spring-like temperature year-round. You may not see grand, historical buildings here but there is plenty to do in and around the capital. Day tours include a visit to Poas, one of the most spectacular volcanoes in the country, with its enormous crater measuring one kilometre in diameter and over 300 meters deep. To view crystal blue sulphur pools and steam rising from the volcanic vents is a different experience. There will opportunity to swim at one of the beautiful lagoons.

Few sites in Costa Rica inspire more respect and admiration than Arenal Volcano. At 5,437 feet, its tall and conical shape stands imposing over the pastured green hillsides that surround its base. Although currently in a resting phase, Arenal remains Costa Rica’s most active volcano for the past 43 years. Its history is charged with eruptions – both major and minor – that have intimately affected the region and the people who live here.

Arenal also offers easily accessible, maximum-adrenalin experiences, for it’s an activity-fest centre for windsurfing, fishing, kayaking, canopy tours, horseback riding, mountain biking, ATV excursions, canyoning and caving, and wind surfing and kite boarding on Lake Arenal. And there are hot springs to relax.
Getting There

There are no direct flights from the UK to Costa Rica. You need to change in either Europe or the US. Your best option is to fly via the US or Madrid, where you can connect with flights to San José. Continental has flights from the UK via Newark and Houston, while American Airlines flies via JFK, Dallas or Miami, and United via New York or Houston: of the three, Continental generally has the lowest fares (from £545 in high season) and offers an excellent service, with swift connections. Iberia’s flights via Madrid are one of the quicker routings, and avoid the US, but start at around £650. Indirect flights can still take as little as thirteen hours, including changes.

Day 02 – Explore the Surrounds
San Jose Today highlights include Poas Volcano, Doka coffee plantation and Sarchí and Grecia rural towns.

Take a private tour to the Poás Volcano, and see coffee plantations, fern, flower and strawberry farms along the way, creating a colourful landscape. Lunch is included in Doka Estate Coffee Plantation, a third-generation coffee plantation, where we will have the opportunity to learn how coffee is picked, milled, ground and roasted.

The beautiful town of Grecia is an important tourist destination mainly due to the Cathedral de la Mercedes, a gothic style church made from metal pieces that were imported from Belgium in the 1890’s. It’s as beautiful from the inside as it is impressive from the outside. In the town of Sarchi, known as the Cradle of Costa Rican Artisans, you will have time to enjoy the artistic work of local artisans as they create the famous typical oxcarts.

Irazu Volcano is the highest active volcano in Costa Rica, close to San Jose, easily visited taking a scenic road leading right up to the summit crater (3,432m). On a clear day, it is possible to see both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. However, such clear days are very rare indeed, and most of the time the volcano's summit is covered.

The route passes through some of the most important agricultural areas in this province, thanks to the richness of the soil produced by the volcanic ashes. The Lankester Botanical Garden is internationally recognised for its collections of epiphytes, mainly orchids. The greenhouses here  host over 3,000 species of plants.

When to go December through April: This is the tourist high season in Costa Rica when the weather is at its most pleasant. It is also the dry season, and one can mostly depend on clear, sunny days. There is a brief dry spell from February to April but it's worthwhile to visit in April-May.

May through October: The rainy season takes a while to get started in May, often diminishing for a couple of weeks in June or July. The brunt of the rain however falls on the Caribbean coast, giving the Pacific a much more arid climate. The only really rainy months in Guanacaste on the Pacific coast are October and November, and on the Atlantic coast, the only predictably dry months are September and October.

October to December: This is also a good time to visit Costa Rica when things are much quieter and when the weather is still good.

Visas British nationals don’t need a visa to enter Costa Rica. You can stay as a visitor for up to 3 months, although the exact period is at the discretion of the immigration officer on arrival. The immigration authorities are strict about foreigners who have overstayed.

Passport validity: Your passport should have at least one day’s validity from the date you are leaving Costa Rica. If you hold a passport other than a British Citizen passport, different regulations may apply.
