Review

Begin in Cape Town with a tour of the Cape Peninsula, an area of scenic beauty. This narrow finger of land with its many beautiful valleys, bays and beaches is bound by the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean in the west and the warm waters of False Bay in the east. Next day, take an excursion in the tranquillity and beauty of the Cape Winelands. Travel to the French Quarter of Franschhoek, home to the French Huguenots, who first made wine in this area some 300 years ago.

Fly to Kruger National Park, that offers some of the best game viewing available in Africa and stay at the Jock Safari Lodge. Twelve luxury suites offer guests the unique opportunity to experience the gracious style of old world elegance surrounded by unspoiled wilderness.

Next, travel to Victoria Falls, one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world, on the border of Zimbabwe and Zambia. Enjoy a private sundowner cruise, a private walking tour of the falls, a scenic helicopter ride over the falls, and an elephant-back safari. Other activities can be arranged as per your interests, such as kayaking on the Zambezi River or a visit to a Mukuni village. Return to Johannesburg, where you will be assisted to your international flight.

Continue to Botswana, a vast, flat dry land - as big as France but with a population of only 1.6 million, many of whom live in or near the two main cities of Gaborone and Francistown. Over 80 per cent of the country is semi-desert, but, in spite of this, abundant wildlife thrives, and with so few people, Botswana boasts the largest percentage of land given over to wildlife in the world. Here, you might find yourself racing an ostrich or a herd of zebras down a dusty track, and you'll get what you pay for - and more.

Getting There Johannesburg with its O.R. Tambo International Airport is the air transport hub of Southern Africa and is linked to the rest of the world by many major airlines. Other international airports are located in Cape Town and Durban, but few flights from Europe or America fly directly to either destination. There is a good network of internal flights.

Travelling around South Africa is mostly by car and a good range of car rental companies are available. The road system is amongst the best in Africa. However, travelling off the beaten track to the national parks is virtually impossible by public transport. This is mostly organised by local tour operators.

When to go The best time to visit Kruger and most wildlife parks is from May to September. This is the dry season and animals congregate around waterholes and rivers.

The climate of South Africa is generally mild throughout the country with warm, sunny days and cool nights. There's really not a bad time to visit, but winter is a good time (especially October) if you are going for a safari – grass is short, and the animals tend to gather around watering holes.

In winter, due to altitude, temperatures drop to the freezing point, and in places even lower. Snow is a possibility June-August in the mountain areas. It generally rains in the afternoon during the summer (November-February) everywhere in the country except in the Cape Province, where it rains during the winter.

Visas If you’re a UK citizen and visiting South Africa for tourism or business purposes for a period of up to 90 days, you don’t need a visa.

The South African government doesn’t accept British passports that have been extended by 12 months by British Embassies and Consulates under exceptional measures put in place in mid-2014. You won’t be able to enter or exit South Africa on an expired British passport with an extension stamp.
